WhatsApp new features for business: prices, ads window, AI agent, usernames and calling

WhatsApp changed more in 2026 than a feature list shows: a new price on 1 October, a longer free window after ads, AI replies billed by the token and usernames that can hide a customer’s phone number. This guide sorts the updates by what they cost and what they ask you to do.

WhatsApp New Features for Business: Quick Answer

The short version:

  • The updates that change a business’s costs are on the WhatsApp Business Platform: service messages are paid again after 1,000 a month, and the free window after an ad can last up to 7 days.

  • Meta’s own AI agent, Meta Business Agent, is billed per token. Its messages are charged even inside the free windows.

  • Usernames are the quiet change: once a customer adopts one, you may receive an ID instead of their phone number.

  • The 24-hour window, the opt-in rule and template approval are unchanged. Prices can next move on 1 January 2027, and Meta’s changelog lists the rest.

Two things are easy to mix up. The Business app is the free phone app. The Business Platform is the API that providers connect to, and the prices below belong to it.

What you need for the API lists the requirements. Every date here comes from Meta or WhatsApp pages we read on 27 October 2026.

What a Message Costs From 1 October 2026

Meta charges for each delivered message from a business, by its category and the customer’s country. Two kinds of message that were free before 1 October are paid again: service replies after the first 1,000 a month on each business phone number, and utility templates sent inside an open 24-hour window. These are the rates for messages to India on Meta’s INR rate card; an account billed in another currency uses that currency’s card.

Marketing

₹0.8631

Offers, promotions, reminders

Utility

₹0.115

Order updates, confirmations

Authentication

₹0.115

One-time passwords

Service

₹0.115

Replies in an open window, after the first 1,000 a month

Authentication-international

₹2.4971

Only where Meta applies it

This is Meta’s INR rate card for India, per delivered message, effective 1 October 2026.

Two sums

  • 1,500 service replies in a month: the first 1,000 are free, so 500 × ₹0.115 = ₹57.50.
  • 10,000 messages cost ₹8,631 as marketing and ₹1,150 as utility.

The 1,000 free messages don’t roll over, and Meta resets the count at midnight in your Messaging account’s time zone. Businesses on the Marketing Messages API can also set a max price per marketing message, in open beta since 1 October. India’s own rates did not change on 1 October: marketing went up on 1 January and authentication-international on 1 April. For the full picture of sending, see WhatsApp bulk messages.

The Free Window After an Ad Is Now Up to 7 Days

When a customer messages you from an ad that clicks to WhatsApp and you reply within the customer service window, your reply opens a free entry point window. Meta’s documentation now says it may stay open for up to 7 days. While it is open, marketing, utility, authentication and service messages are free. It applies only when the customer uses the Android or iOS app, not web or desktop.

Before

72 hours

Now

Up to 7 days

The window after a click-to-WhatsApp ad grew from 72 hours to up to 7 days in Meta’s 28 September 2026 update.

Old figures are still online

When we checked, Meta’s business pricing page still said 72 hours and free service messages. The developer documentation is the one Meta updates, so check dates before you trust a number.

Meta Business Agent messages stay charged even inside the window. To run the ads themselves, see Click-to-WhatsApp ads and ad examples.

Meta Business Agent: AI Replies Billed by the Token

Meta announced the agent on 3 June 2026. It answers questions about your business, recommends products from your catalog, books appointments, qualifies leads and hands over to your team when you decide. Meta says more than a million businesses already use one on WhatsApp and Messenger. Getting started is free, and Meta says paid subscriptions follow in the coming months.

On the Platform it is a fifth message category, billed at one global rate of $2.00 per million tokens. Meta says a message uses 20,000 to 25,000 tokens, about 4 to 5 US cents. Volume tiers and the free tier don’t apply to it.

Simple question

about 16–20 US cents

“At what time do you open?” — 4 messages, about 80,000 tokens

Complex interaction

about 40–50 US cents

A step-by-step walkthrough — 10 messages, about 250,000 tokens

These are Meta’s own estimates for a whole interaction, not a single message.

Not every number qualifies. Meta’s developer documentation asks for a Business Platform number in good standing, in an eligible country and in a supported business category; finance, government, health, alcohol, gambling and matrimony services are excluded. The pages we read name no countries, only a per-number eligibility check. An AI agent from another provider is not part of this category: Meta treats its replies as service messages.

Usernames: A Phone Number May Not Arrive

WhatsApp let people reserve a username from 29 June 2026 and is rolling usernames out country by country. A username shows instead of a phone number in the app. For a business the catch is technical: Meta now sends a business-scoped user ID, or BSUID, with every message, and supporting it is required for partners and direct integrations.

Customer without a username

  • Phone number: in the webhook
  • BSUID: in the webhook

Customer with a username

  • BSUID: US.13491208655302741918 (format example from Meta)
  • Username: in the webhook
  • Phone number: only if one of the three conditions below is true

This is what Meta’s message feed, called a webhook, delivers to your provider, according to Meta’s documentation of 23 October 2026.

The number still arrives if any of these is true:

You messaged or called the customer’s number in the last 30 days.

The customer messaged or called you in the last 30 days.

The customer is in your contact book. The check runs per business phone number.

A BSUID belongs to one business portfolio and changes if the customer changes number. It can send any message except one-tap, zero-tap and copy-code authentication templates, which need the phone number. A business’s own username does not hide its number, and Meta says it is not meant for privacy.

Two Accounts, and One Number on the App and the API

Meta split the WhatsApp Business account in two. Phase 1 began on 23 September 2026 and reaches all businesses by mid-October; Meta plans a new API version for the first half of 2027 and a mandatory switch for API integrations in the first half of 2028. Until yours is migrated, WhatsApp Manager and Meta Business Suite keep showing the old layout, and existing IDs, endpoints and access tokens keep working.

WhatsApp account

Your business identity: phone numbers, profile and catalogs, and later the business username.

Messaging account

Templates, payment settings, analytics and webhooks. Charges go to the Messaging account that sent each message.

Meta’s new model has these two accounts.

A second change is for businesses already on the Business app. Through Embedded Signup, Meta’s sign-up flow for providers, you can keep the same number on the app and the API. Embedded Signup v5, released on 20 October 2026, turns that option on by default with an opt-out.

API messages follow the prices above. In WABB this is the Connect WhatsApp Business App option, shown in Check It in WABB.

Stays in the app

  • Calls, catalog, greeting and away messages, quick replies, labels and the profile.
  • Messages you send from the app stay free.

Syncs or changes

  • One-to-one chats and contacts sync, up to the last 6 months of chats.
  • Group chats don’t sync, broadcast lists become read-only and disappearing messages switch off.
  • Throughput is fixed at 20 messages per second.

This is how Meta describes a number used on both the Business app and the API.

The practical gain is that one number can work with several providers, each with its own templates and billing.

Calling: Two Different Updates

Calling changed in two places, and they are easy to confuse. One is for people using the apps; the other is for businesses connected through the API.

In the WhatsApp app

  • 28 Jul 2026: audio and video calls from WhatsApp Web, call transfer between devices and a waiting room for call links.
  • 14 Oct 2026: guest calling. Create a link from the Calls tab, and a guest joins from a computer browser with the host’s approval, up to 32 people.

On the Business Platform

  • 25 Jun 2026: voicemail generally available for Cloud API calling.
  • 30 Jun 2026: call recording and transcription, with a required announcement to the customer.
  • Calls have their own Calling API pricing page, separate from message pricing.

Web and guest calls in the app are free, and Platform calls follow the Calling API pricing.

WhatsApp’s call-link Help Center page and its announcements describe the standard WhatsApp app and name no Business-app version, so look in your own Calls tab.

Smaller Changes in the App

These came from WhatsApp’s own feature roundups. The posts don’t say whether each one is in the Business app too.

26 Mar 2026

Two accounts on one iOS device, as on Android, so work and personal numbers need no second phone.

26 Mar 2026

Writing Help can draft a reply from the conversation. WhatsApp says AI features may not reach every user.

29 Jun 2026

Username reservation under Settings → Account → Username. A business can claim its Instagram or Facebook name.

These updates come from the WhatsApp Blog, with the newest at the bottom.

What to Do Now in India

Six checks cover the changes above:

Make sure a payment method is on file, yours if you connect directly or your provider’s if you use one. Without it, service messages beyond the free 1,000 are not delivered.

Check every template’s category. In India a marketing message costs about 7.5 times a utility one, and Meta can act on a template whose messages don’t fit its category.

Ask about INR billing. Meta’s rule covers providers and direct integrations billed in India: all their Messaging accounts must be in INR by 31 December 2026, and from 1 January 2027 non-INR accounts stop delivering.

On prepaid billing, watch the balance. A send can come back accepted and still be rejected for insufficient funds, with error 131042.

Use the 7-day window after ads. Messages sent while it is open are free, so plan follow-ups to land inside it.

Ask your provider about BSUID. If your contact list is keyed on phone numbers, it needs to store the ID as well.

What Stays the Same

The rules you already know did not move:

Customer messages to you are free. Meta charges only for delivered messages from a business to a customer.

The 24-hour window. Free-form replies go out inside it; outside it you need an approved template.

Opt-in. You can message only people who agreed to hear from you.

1 Jan1 Apr1 Jul1 Oct

Meta changes prices only on these four dates. The next one is 1 January 2027, and a rate-card change needs a month’s notice.

Check It in WABB

WABB connects numbers through the official Business Platform, so Meta’s rules above apply to them.

If your number is on the Business app, WABB offers Connect WhatsApp Business App: the number keeps working in the app, chat history syncs and WABB adds automation. This is the coexistence option above. WABB first checks that the country code is supported and the app is version 2.24.17 or higher. Move your number to WABB is the other option, and it does not sync chat history.

WABB Connect WhatsApp screen with two options: Connect WhatsApp Business App, which syncs chat history, and Move your number to WABB, which does not
This is the Connect WhatsApp screen WABB shows when no number is connected, with the Business app option selected.

Settings → Connection shows the changes in two places. The Account tab has a Free service messages card, which counts the free messages used so far this month out of 1,000, next to the number’s Messaging limits and Quality rating.

WABB Connection Account tab with Messaging limits, Number status, Quality rating and a Free service messages card showing 446 of 1,000
This is the Account tab in our demo workspace, with the account ID blurred and the profile row hidden. The counter resets with the calendar month.

The Message templates tab lists each template with its Category, the column that decides what a template costs, and a Status that shows when Meta has approved it.

WABB Message templates tab with Name, Category, Language and Status columns, showing Marketing and Utility templates marked Approved
Our demo workspace lists these three templates, and the other rows are hidden.

Before a send, read the Category column for every template you plan to use and match it to the rate table above. Marketing has the highest rate, so a promotion filed as utility is the first thing to check. The tab’s own note says templates are Meta-approved messages you need to reach people more than 24 hours after their last interaction.

Billing → Usage is a different meter. It shows the Credits counter, with a Buy credits button.

This is the Credits counter in our demo workspace. Credits are bought from WABB and are not Meta’s message charges.

Usernames are different. WABB lists contacts by phone number: the Contacts page has a WhatsApp number column, and its System filter offers Phone, First name, Last name, Full name, Subscribed, Phone code and Email, with no username or BSUID field. We found no WABB page on how it treats a customer whose number Meta does not send, so ask WABB support before you rely on number-based lists.

WABB Contacts System filter list with Phone, First name, Last name, Full name, Subscribed, Phone code and Email
This is the System filter list on the Contacts page, and none of its fields is a username or a BSUID.

WABB’s plans are on the pricing page, which does not list Meta’s per-message charges. A WABB AI Agent is not Meta Business Agent: you build it in AI Lab, it starts from Automation → Keywords, and its replies inside the 24-hour window are service messages under Meta’s rules, with AI credits counted too. To route a customer to a person or a flow first, see the chatbot builder.

FAQ

Common Questions

What are the main WhatsApp changes for businesses in 2026?

On the Business Platform: paid service messages after 1,000 a month from 1 October, a free window after ads of up to 7 days, Meta Business Agent billed per token, usernames with business-scoped user IDs, and a new two-account model. In the apps: web and guest calling and two accounts on one iOS device. See At a Glance.

Are service messages free now?

Only the first 1,000 a month on each business phone number. Meta charges from the 1,001st, and the count resets every month without rolling over. Reactions are not charged and don’t count toward the 1,000, and eligible government and non-profit organizations keep free service messages. See Message Prices.

How long is the free window after a click-to-WhatsApp ad?

Meta’s documentation, updated on 28 September 2026, says up to 7 days, where it was 72 hours. Some Meta pages still show 72 hours. Replying within the customer service window opens it, and it covers marketing, utility, authentication and service messages. See Free Window.

How much does Meta Business Agent cost?

Meta bills $2.00 per million tokens. Meta says a message uses 20,000 to 25,000 tokens, which it puts at about 4 to 5 US cents. Getting started is free, and Meta says paid subscriptions follow in the coming months. See Meta Business Agent.

Will WhatsApp usernames hide my customers’ phone numbers?

They can. When a customer adopts a username, the number is left out of your webhooks unless you messaged or called them in the last 30 days, they contacted you, or they are in your contact book. See Usernames.

Do these price changes apply to the WhatsApp Business app?

The pricing page we read covers the Business Platform, meaning Cloud API and the Marketing Messages API. It says nothing about per-message charges in the Business app. See Quick Answer.

When can WhatsApp change prices next?

Meta says it may update pricing only on the first day of a quarter, so the next date is 1 January 2027. A rate-card change needs at least one month’s notice. See What Stays the Same.
